MSTS DAYS

I WILL USE THIS PAGE FOR THOSE IMPORTANT, TIMELY BULLETINS OF WHICH THERE HAVE ONLY BEEN A COUPLE SO FAR!

DEATH OF THE BARRETT!: I just this evening (13 JUN 07) learned that the ship will be towed sometime in the next thirty days to Bay Bridge Enterprises in Chesapeake for destruction!

22 JUNE 07: Erhard Koehler is on the scene and working. He says that that tow is tentatively now scheduled for July 18th but that there are many variables like the weather, bridge closures, movement of Navy ships, and the like. So many people who have been associated with the ship have wanted to ride aboard or along that there are just too many to be accommodated. There may be a site or two established to get a good view of the ship as she passes by and there may be a ship open house about a week later for anybody who wants one last visit. I'll post here whatever information that I get.

24 JUN 2007: It's beginning to dawn on me that perhaps I won't get back there for any of the "events". What with the relatively short notice of things, the variables, the cost of plane tickets when you can't book sufficiently in advance, lodging, car rental, things that I am committed to do here, family and friends emergencies, etc., I just may have to skip the "services". But, at least for the moment, I'm planning on being there for at least some part of it all.

26 JUN 2007: No new news. My cost will probably be about $1,000 what with flight, car rental, car park at LAX, hotel and food. So, maybe it's not in the cards for me to be there but I'm still thinking.

28 JUN 2007: Erhard Koehler knows all the right people to try to get something arranged and he is working on it. He says that the July 18 Tow date is firm subject only to those variables that beset the plans of men. Erhard has a degree of authority over the SAVANNAH which is tied up at Norshipco and will have a great view of the BARRETT as she passes by. Ehard says he will host a "pass in review" site on the SAVANNAH on the date of the tow. Many of you know your way around there but many of us don't so I'll be posting more information and directions as things firm up even more.

3 JUL 07: Nothing new to report. Have a happy 4th. Security will be low tomorrow so I'm going to sneak aboard with my deck chair, bar-b-q, John Philip Sousa CD, and the like and have a bar-b-q up on the sundeck.

13 JUL 07: Tow still set for the 18th as far as I know. Since I haven't made any reservations yet, it seems highly unlikely that I will be there for the tow. Have received no new information in the last ten days.

18 JUL 07: The tow was completed today. It appears that all went smoothly. Pictures will be available soon. It looks doubtful also that many of us or any of us will be allowed back on board or even close. But...

BULLETIN BOARD

I just found an interesting group, the AP TROOP TRANSPORT GROUP. I found their post on www.koreanwar.org just a few days ago. The link to that site is on the link page. They are having their 17th Annual Reunion in Illinois. It's the 9th through the 12th of June, 2005. You can contact Chuck Ulrich at cfu115@aol.com.

6 AUG 08: I just got the "first call" from the A.P. TRANSPORT REUNION GROUP about their May 2-9 2009 reunion. It looks like a good one! A five day Bahama cruise. Contact Chuck (cfu115@aol.com) or Carl (cgandusnsaps@aol.com) for more info. I was at their 2006 reunion in Virginia Beach, VA and enjoyed being with them. I, personally, won't be going to any more family or military reunions until they are held in Heaven. I would go to another high school reunion since it's only 125 miles away but I fear that our reunion organizers have run out of steam so I guess that I will have to wait for Heaven to see those good folks again also.

5 JUN 08: SEP 29 TO OCT 2, 2008 FOR THE 14TH NATIONAL REUNION OF KOREAN WAR VETERANS FROM ALL SERVICES. BEING HELD AT THE TROPICANA EXPRESS HOTEL/CASINO, LAUGHLIN, NV.
CALL 1-800-523-4715 FOR MAIL OUT INFO. MSG1GAL@AOL.COM
Dick Gallmeyer is the founder and President of the Board. Dick isn't too quick about answering his email but he's right on the other end of that phone when you call.

FEB 06: I just noticed in the March 2006 edition of the American Legion Magazine that the USS General Mann is having a reunion in Albuquerque, NM, May 5-7, 2006. On my LINK page is a link to their website with information.

12 NOV 05: I just received notice from the AP TROOP TRANSPORT GROUP about their June 8-11, 2006 reunion in Virginia Beach, VA. This is their eighteenth annual reunion. It looks like another good time. I will leave the earlier reunion stuff on here and you can contact Chuck or Carl for further information and some material in the mail if it looks interesting to you. I'm definitely going. I have already made my plane, motel and automobile reservations! I'm also trying to get aboard the BARRETT which, I think, is still anchored just upriver in the James River at Fort Eustis. The Troop Transport Group has also arranged for several interesting tours while at the reunion.
